Money is the root of all evil...
Or is it? In fact, this popular saying is a misquote from the Bible. What the Bible actually says is that the love of money is at the root of all kinds of evil. Money is not the problem itself, it's our attitude to it.
We know that's true. Too often people are just not content with what they have. Sometimes their stories hit the headlines - think of John Darwin, the canoeist who returned from the dead.
Does the Bible do any more than identify the problem? Indeed it does! For example, it underlines the connection between work and money. 'If a man shall not work, he shall not eat'. In normal circumstances that makes obvious sense. But the Bible also encourages generosity towards those who are in need. Rich people are told not to exploit the poor but rather to help them financially.
Such practical wisdom is typical of what the Bible has to say. God knows very well the best way for us to live. You can judge for yourself what difference it would make if only we listened to him.
