About us: What is 'church'?
Many people think of 'church' as a special building, perhaps with stained glass windows and a steeple. Others see it as an organisation with power and influence.
In fact, 'church' is a group of people. The Bible describes it as 'the body of Christ', made up of individual Christians. So 'church' is not a special building where God is present, but the people in whom God lives. Another picture of 'church' is the family of God, which makes it much more than a human organisation.
'Church' can be used to mean every Christian, past, present and future. But 'church' also has a local identity. So here in Soho and Covent Garden, we are a group of Christians who call ourselves Hope Community Church.
We enjoy links with many other Christians elsewhere. It is sad that there is so much division amongst churches, but we are glad to express our unity with all those who share the same faith in Jesus Christ, whatever their background.
